God's word authorizes that each local congregation be overseen by a group of men called elders - "...and appoint elders in every town as I directed you" (Titus 1:5). Elders are directed to pay careful attention to the church "in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers" (Acts 20:17, 28). As members of the local congregation, we are directed to respect "those who are...over you in the Lord and admonish you" (1 Thessalonians 5:12).
Within the local congregation, God has also authorized the appointment of a second group of men called deacons (1 Timothy 3:8-13). Typically, these men are directed by the elders to help organize and direct various works of the church (i.e. visitation, benevolence).
Beyond this, we have no authority to add other elements of leadership. Based on God's word, we understand that each congregration is autonomous in it's efforts to serve God.
